Just noticed the rear cassette on my old mtb wobbles when the wheel rotates. I've checked the cassette and it's tight as a badgers. The wheel itself does not wobble, just the cassette. Also, the rear skewer is straight as a die and goes through no probs

Bent rear hub ?

It's not causing any problems when riding but I'd like to know what's going on and is it liable to cause a big failure later down the line

Suggestions would be welcome.

sounds like the freehub bearing is shot ! remove wheel grab cassette and try to rock .there should be no discernable movement

Some cheaper cassettes and freewheels can look like they're moving a bit when free-wheeling but there's nothing actually wrong with them (is it a cassette or freewheel?). Although the freehub body might be knackered if it's a cassette!

gotta be freehub innit. happens when they wear. i've had that and not worried about it. ride it till it knackers iteself which may be a long time away.

then repleace, you need big allen keyy, 8 mm (i'm talking shimano as always) to undo.

pricewise it is almost same as a new hub so may be mnore economical to repalce the whole lot.

I have this on my MTB. Didn't seem to cause any problems but I replaced the (threaded) freewheel thinking it must be the problem. New freewheel (shimano) made no difference whatsoever. I took the axle out and checked it along a straight edge. Seems as straight as a die. Decided to live with it as "if it ain't broke, don't mend it" seems a good attitude to me.

I seem to recall that the old 5 speeds always had a slight wobble on them.

I've got this on my Boardman. I've only just noticed this when the crank is rotated as if you were back pedaling, there is a slight wobble from side to side with the cassette.

My local LBS, they told me its fairly normal to have a wobble which I thought was slightly weird as the cassette on my Marin hybrid doesn't do this?

That is it if I am right I am right if I am wrong I am wrong.

this ain't pantomime so i'll spare the 'oh no its not' responses

Cassettes have never ever been designed to wobble, and if the cassette is wobbling it generally means the freehub is knackered OR there is some bearing/axle problem.

CAUTION......

Hyperglides can seem to wobble due to the tooth profiles....if it runs smooth, and no play, no grumbling bearings, then it's OK.......

They can and do wobble a bit if free-wheeling - i.e. the cassette will move a little - that's down to the machining etc (if loads then it might be knackered).....

You don't say which hub - you might get it on the lower end stuff, but not on the high end kit. !

Also.... he goes on...... the sprockets aren't a 100% tight fit, so you may get some vertical play in sprockets once tightened up (slightly off centre), that might give a 'wobble effect'..... - means nothing as the mech takes up the slack....

It's something I noticed when 6-speed cassettes were taking the world by storm (they tried, anyway).

I mentioned it to my LBS and they said it was quite normal; for some reason they called it 'hunting' I don't know why but they were in East Anglia. Ever since then I have just accepted that it's nothing to worry about. Until today.
