Smear any plated or polished parts with something greasy/oily, thoroughly polish the painted parts with a long-life car wax such as Auto Balm or Collinite, and make sure you check on it periodically. All mine live in a shed, albeit purpose built, apart from my commuter which lives in the porch so I can be out the door quick in the mornings, nary a problem.
Machine slideway oil sticks well,& comes in an aerosol.

As a newbie I am only asking so don't do this until others confirm it is correct!

I read on here that when cleaning the bike, after oiling the chain etc, you should spray the bike with GT85 and then wipe it down, thereby leaving a very thin layer over everything - naturally taking care of brakes. Surely a good idea would be to spray it then not wipe it down until you go to use it? Or am I missing something?

Best regards
