waterproof over trousers are un-cool?? and no-one told me??

They are pretty good at keeping out the rain, but you also then need overshoes 'cos the rain pours off the over trousers and straight into your shoes.

You're not from these parts, are you?

Haha not from quite as far up. Mention Manchester tho and most people get to rain sooner than later but the times I get properly wet are relatively few and far between.

It has to be said that the west of Scotland gets more than its fair share of rain. I travel around a bit for work, and it's uncanny how much rain we get compared to the rest of the country. Even where I am, right on the coast, it is noticeably wetter than Glasgow, 25 miles away. The east of Scotland is positively arid in comparison.
The only real solution is one of these (slightly more uncool than waterproof overtrousers!):

It's completely un-cool, but you could do worse than buy a decent pair of waterproof overtrousers as well. Altura do good ones. It's entirely possible to ride to work without feeling the need to make a dramatic "Clark Kent" transformation.

I have some Altura waterproof trousers, very good, yes a little bit expensive, but well worth the money,
and when you get to work all nice and dry you will be glad you got them.

I try to stay as lightweight as possible. Lycra all over and a windproof, near waterproof Adidas Response jacket. Footwise, I wear a thin sock, wrap my foot in a carrier back and then put another sock on top before slipping my shoes on, which is more to do with keeping my feet warm than dry - can't be fecked to pay for overshoes. Last but not least, I wear a headband over my ears and a neckwarmer from my neck to my nose to keep my face windproofed. Needless to say, things can get very sweaty, but I don;t mind that and I don't mind being a bit soggy on a journey, but the disclaimer to it all is that I keep spare pairs of tights, socks and boxers at work in a locker and I also have a shower as soon as I get in.
