I just recently started cycling and with the upcoming winter months ahead, I wanted to get a start on my shopping. I live in Upstate New York and am figuring that no one really cyles with a winter jacket on. How many people use the arm warmers...and do they work? I found a few that I liked on this site, www.tourcycling.com/category/175/cycling-arm-warmers.aspx but I'm worried that they won't be thick enough through the cold months.

Thanks,
Dax

In Central Illinois, we most certainly cycle with a winter coat on, and sometimes a couple pair of fleece pants, even under regular pants. In the winter you won't need to cycle that fast, so the winter wear won't be such a concern. Cycling jackets are also good for intermediate weather, but knowing what an Upstate New York winter can be like, I'd say you may have to do some cycling in winter wear, as our commuter friends often do. Take a look at what a sporting goods store like Dicks' may have available. I usually just layer fleece, unless it is snowing, then I wear something weatherproof over it. Men, don't forget that third sock when winter cycling.

Last winter was long enough, Shame on you for even thinking that way.
Long Johns are a must at -10C, anything below that, most unpleasant.

Good, warm, weatherproof clothing is absolutely necessary for winter commuting - who wants to be cold, wet and miserable? Pay special attention to the extremities - good shoes + overshoes, top quality gloves, a skull cap and neck warmers. And mudguards (fenders) keep feet dry and protect the drive train. Arm warmers are for cooler summer days and warmer autumn days in this part of the world.

You'll need more than arm warmers in winter!
Go to your Local Bike Shop (LBS) in the fall and have a chat with the staff there. They should be able to guide you.
Remember, regardless of what you have, layering is most important.
