Hi madpensioner, you won't remember this post by now, but I just wanted to say it made me laugh.

Gavroche, I know that you're in a wet and windy part of the world, but I bet you'll be surprised how much winter cycling you can do without suffering. And when you've made the effort, you can get a real buzz out of it. Oh and shouldn't your sig line read Je pédale, donc je suis....?

could you tell me what - je pedale, donc je suis - is - ive looked in my medical book but cant find it - if ive got it is there a cure

I've just bought the following as my two winter hacks:

http://i.ebayimg.com...LDnF5w~~_12.JPG

A Carrera Virtuoso which came from eBay - probably over paid at £120 but it's OK, has Shimano Sora gears, Tiagra brakes and looks/goes much better now it's had a proper clean (appears the first in a LONG time) and has black forks again.

Then I realised that 700x23 tyres probably aren't so good in the snow  so have just bought this on eBay for £25:

It apparently comes with new brakes, tyres and tubes, seat cover and other bits. If that's the case, it's a better buy than the £120 Carrera and means I'm covered all winter, letting the Ridgeback be put away for cold/dry days only.

I intend to keep on doing my 5 mile e/w commute with a 30-40 mile ride on weekends. The only thing that'll stop me is snow and ice and both my bikes are slicked-up.

I'm commuting twice a week all year round (tuesday and wednesday) so will be doing 40 Miles a week through the winter (before weekend rides and my mad dash to bath and back before work randomly) the only off ive had in a few years of riding was a damp day mid summer! i rode through all the snow/ice last year and this year (on a dodgy CX10 apollo/careera hybrid thing) and had no problems so its all good!

If you ride fixed you don't need to ride as far

. Can be interesting on ice though.

I've just picked up the winter £25 mountain bike - an eBay purchase. The description was fine - new tyres/brakes/etc except it did appear a bit small for a 22 inch description.

I've got it home and checked it over. All fine. Then got out the measuring tape - it's 18 inches, not 22  . It's not a 'Falcon', but a Raleigh, the wheels are 24", not 20" and it's adult/teenager, not child's.

It's at: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170710355262
Oh, and it's not a 'Racing bike' as per the title, but I knew that  - it does have a 'shining rim' or two of them even

Why did I pay when I thought it'd be small? Two reasons; it was being sold by a 14 year-old who's not much smaller than me (and I couldn't not pay) plus my kids can use it/I can stick it back on eBay with a proper description.
