Many pro's don't drop the miles these days during winter - that's old hat training.

All year round here - daily commute ensures I'm out all weathers, then if it's not hissing down, I go out at weekends for 1-2 hours on the fast bikes. MTB'ing helps mix it up and that's used for commuting when it's icy - bloody handy the ice tyres.

And this is oop north!!
Took the dog out walking in shorts on Saturday (me in shorts, not the dog, silly). I'm kind of looking forward to it getting, cold, I've got some nice cold weather gear to try out.

On the whole I prefer the cooler days for cycling, though I try to ignore wet days, especially in winter.Tomorrows hail and snow day is certainly one to be avoided.Wednesday is crisp for cycling 'up north'.

If your commuting - as i pointed out it cant be helped - my bike is a trek 2000 with 700/23 tyres and carbon fiber rims - i dont believe i can fit ice tyres - even if i can i dont like very cold weather and it isnt my capabilities that bothers me its cars skidding - because if i am involved in an accident i will come of worst.
with respect to many pros not dropping the miles during the winter - i agree some dont but a lot do - for example if you take the bad snow last winter - i just cant see anyone venturing out - where i live the snow and ice was a problem driving for about 8 weeks - on one evening i had to book in a hotel. During that period i used my turbo trainer - but only covered 50 miles per week.

I rode on 700x23 mm all last winter even when it was gettign down to - 10 ,except for maybe a week when the one bit of cycle path i have to use was frozen solid with compacted snow and ice .
This year i have a full suss BSO off freecycle in reserve for when it gets really bad,it has a seatpost rack and guards although i am leaving the flat pedals as it might be better than clipless for the times i envisage using it.
