My best bit of gear is the Gore Oxygen jacket.
I couldn't have got through last winter without them (I do have a couple now).
Wore them everyday with just a merino wool base layer even when it went to -10.
Not the cheapest but it stopped me wearing my waterproof jacket which left me sopping wet by the time I'd finished my commute.
I did struggle with gloves though.
I've ended up with a pair of Specialized Sub Zero gloves.
The base glove has come in very handy over the past few days with the wet weather.

Having commuted for over 20 years the most important bit of kit worth spending money on is gloves. Desent gloves will make all the difference. I'm using pair i got as a present that i'm told were expensive and still get cold fingers. Buy the best you can.
