Just make sure the headset stack is tightened up. When you apply the front brake and push forward on the handlebars there should be no movement. I had to learn how to do this when I got my first boxed bike.

I think I did this but will check again in the morning. I found out that one of the bolts on the left crank was not tightened at all so am alert to the possibility of other mistakes from WB's! Just not sure if I will recognise them if I see them...

Post a pic of the leftover bits just to be sure. Probably the shims that go in the brakes to adjust the reach I'm guessing. Reflectors and bell too

Here's the bits. I get the orange reflector wheel things which I doubt I'll attach. Not sure which bracket is for which front/rear reflectors and where to fix them. There seem to be some mysterious black rubber thingy's marked L/R and some stickers?

Also have I got this right? The zero is lined up with the middle bit?

Also...I've attached the front wheel with the quick release mechanism. Is there supposed to be a safety devise as well? Is it integrated into the front forks or something else?

Went out on a (very) quick ride and while puffing up the first big hill I discovered that the front left hand side Sora shifter is completely frozen and doesn't work. Any ideas?

Check to see if the cable is running correctly down the frame, under the BB (in the plastic guide) and into the pinch nut on the front mech.

Check to see if the front mech moves OK by loosening the pinch nut and pushing the mech outwards with your thumb.

There should be 2mm at least of clearance between the mech and the chainring.

With the cable slackened off in the pinch nut try moving the shift lever.

The downshift can be quite stiff on new levers. The photo above has the chain on the big ring, if the cable tension is a bit high the downshift will be stiff. The cable should be quite slack but not floppy in the small ring with no trim set.

Adjusting the pinch nut correctly should solve this.

They are pad spacers, used to adjust the distance between the brake levers and the handlebars. There should be 2 pairs, 4 degrees and 8 degrees.

If you can comfortably reach the brakes at the moment, you don't need them. If (like me) you have small hands, you should insert a pair so you don't have to stretch as far with your fingers.

Brief fitting instructions and diagrams are on the Shimano technical document (look for "ST-3400 Reach adjustment") - which Winstanleys should have supplied with the bike, along with lots of other information sheets. If you didn't get them, the Shimano site is worth bookmarking.

Great thanks for posting that  . I didn't get lots of information sheets with the bike, just a generic one which was of little use.

Winstanleys didn't call back to help with my shifter problem despite me calling twice today and being promised a call back. I'm going to keep quiet about the problem being solved as I'm interested to see if they call back at all.
