Shimano shifter will work fine with a Campag front. I used to use 8sp (and 9sp) Shimano STIs with a Mirage front. All front mechs from Shimano, SRAM, Campag and others are effectively interchangeable. The only conflict is at the rear.

If only. Even within Shimano that is not the case - their mtb front mechs require far more cable pull than road front mechs e.g. Pretty much any triple shifter can pull a front mech across a double chainset; getting it right on a triple chainset, when the shifter is indexed with limited trim, is on the other hand far from guaranteed.

Indeed, but in case you are unaware Campag (e.g. Mirage) triple front mech cable pull requirement is nearly the same as Shimano mtb ones.
