I've been across fields and all sorts of crappy surfaces on mine and apart from additional dirt it isn't too bad.

Really enjoyed that.

The guy in the vid is not your average cylist then:wacko:

Canal paths, track with chippings, tracks with ice and snow, if you really think about it unless your doing stuff BMX/MTB are designed for most bikes will fine.
He tragically broke his back and is now a paraplegic. He has written a blog on it and rides a handbike.

Thank you the very reassuring comments folks.
The update is that I traveled for a couple of miles down dirt and gravel tracks yesterday during a ride with a group I join in with. As you mostly predicted, no problems.
Many thanks to you all.

I saw a couple of people riding the Monkey Trail at Cannock on road bikes with flat bars and knobblier tyres. They didn't seem to have any problems with it.

So, I've got my first, n e, shiny new road bike:

A 2013 Cube Peloton Pro Triple.

The question is, if I were to pootle down the Sett Valley Trail from Hayfield to New Mills with it or along the well-surfaced canal towpath twixt Whaley Bridge and New Mills ... will it self destruct? Of course, this is a question posed mainly at those familiar with these routes in north Derbyshire.

I ask, because these are both quiet, pleasant access routes to nice roads from my home in Hayfield. And no ... I don't expect to be rattling along at 20 mph plus. Again, I'm not used to a lightweight road bike yet and have no experience of capabilities.

Go easy on me folks.

I AM, however, gettin' along with it just fine on the roads, five days into ownership.

Oh ... and enough with the "helpful" comments re white handlebar tape . I already know, OK?
Cheers all,
Geoff
Its fine. I take mine off road, down dirt tracks and hop pavements etc daily. Not on my new tires this week though!!! As they are soooo pretty ;) lol

The very fact that you have to ask this is a bit sad really. Not that long ago we bought bikes to RIDE. You toured on them [whatever the road], went to work on them and you could even do a bit sporting riding on them. Now people seem to be afraid of using the things. Unless you intend to race down a rock strewn cliff just get out there and use it - if it's too feeble to use it aint much good anyhow. Still that's progress.
