Hi,

Thinking of putting a different cassette on my winter bike - 11/28 or a 12/27. It's a 2010 Specialised Secteur Sport Triple, 50/39/30 and 12-25 (Shimano HG-50, 9-speed, 12-25t ) at the back. Will it take it ok??

More info:

Front Derailleur: Shimano Sora

Rear Derailleur: Shimano Tiagra

Shifters: Shimano Sora STI, flight deck compatible

Chainset: Shimano FC-R453

Chainrings: 50 x 39 x 30T

Bottom Bracket: Shimano BB-ES25, Octalink spline, cartridge bearing, 68mm x 118mm

Cassette: Shimano HG-50, 9-speed, 12-25t

Chain: KMC X9 w/ reusable Missing Link

What rear mech does it have?

I had the same idea earlier this year with my Secteur, in the end I put a slightly smaller granny ring(28t) on instead to give the same low gear as a 27/28 cassette.

I think the maximum recommended is 27 at the back but it might work, I just didn't want to risk it and the granny ring was cheap and easy to fit

12/27 is definitely fine - I have one with a triple on my winter/ touring bike. I expect that 11/ will work, but you might notice the bigger jumps between ratios.

If you're worried that 50/12 is too small a top gear, don't be. You can still pedal comfortably up to about 30mph.

Excuse my ignorance but - as the bike is a 9-speed cassette does that have to be replaced with another 9 speed? Could I put a 10 speed on say? (A quick look for a 9 speed Tiagra 12/27 showed zero currently available - only Chainreaction cycles seem to even carry it and it's out of stock)

You would need to change the shifters (as they will have 9 indexed clicks and not ten) and possibly the chain and the new cassette may require a thinner one.

Cheers, that's a no then! If I cant track down a 9 speed Tiagra 12/27 then are there Sram or Campag equivalents that would work ok??

Sram will work but not Campy.
I am running a Sram 12-26 currently and am waiting for that Tiagra 12-27 to finally come into stock at CRC, it's been on there for ages and the date keeps moving back, whether it actually exists is another matter

Sorry to trouble you, but could you tell me where you found the 28 granny ring? Thanks.

Thanks, potsy. This morning, on the ride to Brighton, I had plenty of time to dream about amazing gear combinations that would spirit me up Turner's Hill and Ditchling with virtually no effort, albeit at a snails pace.

I think SRAM do a Shimano-compatible cassette with at least a 32T that should should fit my Secteur. With a suitable rear mech. to service this obscene combination, I will attempt the Eiger Nordwand....

SRAM and Shimano cassettes are compatible (at 7/8/9sp at least), and it's worth working out which one would suit you better. In my experience Shimano cassettes are spaced more evenly across the range whereas SRAM ones have much closer gearing at the top end with bigger jumps in the low gears. This effect is of course greater with wider range cassettes (mine are 8sp and 11-32)
PS: 28x32 can get even slow fat buggers like me up Ditchling (and has done)

Any Shimano 9 speed cassette will do, as long as the rear derailleur can handle it for size.

I have a Tiagra set-up and have just changed to this 11-28 cassette.

Shimano 9 speed

I had to alter the screw on the derailleur, and big / big combination would mean the chain was very tight, but I avoid that combination anyway.
