Do you see a place for hub gears at all RAFN?

Hi Nebulous in case you haven't seen it, a good list of pros and cons comparison is here, and the site is an exceptional source of information for hub gear fans.

Imho all of us have our own priorities, some rational and some irrational (yes!), so I would suggest go for whatever that makes you happy! After all, given you are evidently a fettler/builder, if you don't like the result it will just give you a great excuse (if any is needed) to fettle/build something else.

... Finally good sized person pedalling downhill furiously at 150 gear inches what brakes have you got?

On a nice long gentle descent I'm expecting payback. I want bunny hops from the back end as the V's strain to haul the overweight missile down for the corners. I want smoke from those blocks, I want to feel the frame flex on the corners as the pedals scrape the ground. Trouble is I may well need a better bike, of which I am of course unworthy

As we all know, it is not about the bike! Have cake, eat cake? Sure you don't eat raw meat for breakfast? ;)
