I have been wearing Shimano shoes with clipless pedals for the last 15 months or so. To cut a long story short, I've concluded that (apart from cold weather!) the main cause of two of my middle toes becoming numb during most rides is that the shoes are too narrow.

I know from researching a little that Northwave appear to make (generally) wider fitting shoes as do Lake. My normal shoe size is a 10 so I'm guessing that either a NW or Lake shoe in size 11 should do th job.

Does anyone have any views/tips form their own experience ?

Thanks

Shimano shoes are a smaller/narrower fit.
Specialized shoes are larger/wider. Cannot speak for Northwave.

I'd have a look at the Specialized S Works BOA's - my old pair has a more rounded toe than others I have used and they don't squash the feet up so much. Haven't tried the new ones - they are around £200, though you can get the non-Boa's for a lot less.

If you think £200 is a lot then try them on - they are fantastically comfortable.

If you've managed with the shimano shoes for that long then it sounds like they're not too far narrow for you so don't worry about getting the widest possible shoes. Specialized are that bit wider and worked a treat for me after arriving at the same conclusion after buying a pair of 43 shimano road shoes (fortunately I tried them on again at home and could return them!). Just go a try some on, I found some minor variation in size between some of the different specialized models so it's even worth bearing that in mind rather than just buying the pair that fit your budget.

Sidi do most of their shoes in 'Mega' versions which are quite wide - worth a look?

I take a standard size 11 or 46 in shoes and training shoes and have two pairs of Northwave road shoes size 46 and one pair of Lake MTB shoes size 46 and they fit perfect. I also have wide feet. Italian shoes are narrow fitting i.e. Sidi or Diadora, however if you do like a particular Sidi Model then they also have the Mega range of shoes for wider fitting but they are very difficult to get hold of.In my experience its best to go to the shop and try the various makes, models and see what fits best.
