Why do you watch YouTube?

I'm inclined to forget about it to be honest, but agree it can be useful to find out how to do stuff. I should really explore it a bit more and see what's on it I suppose.

There’s a wide range of subjects readily available, like going to a library specialising in subjects I’m intrrested in:
Sport, music, films, documentaries, travel, interviews, TV series, bicycle repairs, DIY, cooking, and great for nostalgia and curiosity.
Saying that, I’m not on it very much, but I’m now off work until Easter and if I’m unable to go abroad for that time, I’ve got a smart TV, comfortable chairs and all the food and drink I’ll need in the food store a 10-minute walk away.

Occasionally it's to watch "how to" videos, but 99% of time I watch people doing things that I either can't afford, don't have time for, don't have space for or simply don't have the skills to do. I've learned a lot about restorations of cars/bikes/old tools that I'd love to do but can't (see above).

It's also nice having new videos pop up that you've subscribed to, and not having to wade through everything to find something good (as per Netflix/TV)

It helps a lot with some of my other hobbies. When ever the wife decides to watch her crap on tv it's straight to you tube for me. That works the other way round aswel.

Not what, but why do you watch YouTube?

I use it as a learning tool but more frequently, just as a "get away from life for a while" thing. It got me thinking as to pre-YouTube days when people would just sit in front of the TV and watch rubbish regardless of whether they liked it or not. Now, they have YouTube; at least they (and I) can watch videos upon videos of things I'm interested in.

Sometimes (mostly) for “how to” but also for events I missed and a certain proportion of “car crash” type stuff, e.g. “10 scary aircraft landings”.

Wood-turning “porn“ is quite therapeutic and very educational, even though I don’t do wood-turning myself

I do wood turning, and watch a lot of that. I also watch a lot of GCN stuff, both the free Youtube videos and the GCN+ which I subscribe to (the latter isn't strictly Youtube). And other cycling stuff just following links.

The Woodturning stuff and some of the cycling stuff I watch to learn, other cycling stuff just for entertainment. I also watch a fair few music videos on Youtube just for entertainment.

As a source of information for How to do x guides. Makes it easier watching a video than simply referring to static text, for me.
Secondarily for watching reviews on. I don't really watch any conventional shows or music on it, Sky and Spotify fill those requirements fine, for me at least.

It's very useful for how-to's, YT showed me how to change the battery on my old Drift Stealth 2 camera which is still in service.

Also good for niche interests like shooting or cycling. Again, with how-tos or just news & reviews. Some of the road safety/dashcam channels are entertaining or instructive. Learning from others' mistakes can be useful.

I follow a few people on YouTube , I find it interesting seeing places that people adventure either cycle , 4x4 or van touring , I also follow a few woodworking channels and I use it for music .
TV these day ps is half rubbish and repeats day after day

I use it as an educational resource mostly, there's a "How to" for pretty much everything.
I've most recently learned how to make armatures for Fimo sculptures, replace sticking joysticks on Nintendo controllers, replace a cracked camera lens on Samsung smartphone, fix a leaking toilet cistern, restore pressure on a central heating boiler, all sorts that I didn't know how to do before.
I also like little mini documentaries that tell me something factual (usually historical) that I didn't know so much about.

It makes my teeth itch that my daughter just uses it as the equivalent of mental chewing gum, watching endless "reaction videos".
Sheesh, whoever thought there'd be an entertainment niche for those who like watching videos of other people watching videos?

Love YT for many of the reasons already listed. So much of the other stuff is ruined by presenters and their egos. Then there's all the what's coming up next bollox, and after the break a recap of what went before - actual content is abysmal. YT really is a godsend for me, that and Piratebay.
