Shimano always say that other maker's kit is inompatible with theirs even when it clearly isn't.
I use Shimano HG 8 speed chains and have for a long time. I also carry the SRAM split links (forgotten their name for the moment) in case I have a chain problem. I know they fit, as I've put them on chains when I've split them to shorten them. Guess what Shimano say about that practice.
