Why can't people take the time to read a full Ebay description?

I've stripped down a fixed wheel Flying Gate with the intention of restoring to being a geared version and converting it from a 27" wheel set to a 700c wheel set.

I've been selling the unwanted components on Ebay and was doing well until a mad bidder from the USA outbid everyone else for the wheels. The shipping is £130! He could have had wheels built for the shipping costs and I'm not anticipating that he'll cough up.

What really rankles is that there was a clearly worded financial health warning to another USA potential bidder in the Q&A section of the goods. I wonder which bits

'Shipping to the USA would be prohibitive and far exceed the value of the wheels.'

And

'these items are best sold to UK customers as the international shipping costs quite simply are out of proportion to the value of the goods'

The winning bidder didn't understand.

Looks like someone further down the bidders list is going to get a second bite at the cherry.

I blocked foreign bidders for this reason. They drove me nuts.

I'm otherwise pleased with the sale of bike bits.

I still can't get over the winning bidder's stupidity. He didn't even enquire about shipping costs.

I am prepared to ship to the USA. A winning bidder shelled out £90 to have an analytical balance sent over. Shipping costs were £10 less than the cost of the item.

When combined with the proceeds from a single speed crank set and Galaxy frame the reduced revenue from the wheels will cover the almost new wheel set that i purchased complete with tyres, tubes and cassette with nearly enough change left over for a new nine speed 105 chain set for the Flying Gate.

I bought a guitar from Ebay USA a while ago. the guitar was about twenty quid more than the shipping. Although I did have an excuse as guitars like it are pretty hard to find over here.

I've bought and sold stuff from far-far-away too but it's the fat people living in trailers we're talking about here! Like the guy who bought my Nintendo Game Cube when it wouldn't even work in his country! Or the woman who tried to pay for an item with a US cheque, with the word 'dollars' crossed out and the word 'pounds' written in! In the end it was just easier to lock them out.

I think there's a ot of kudos in being able to brag that you bought something overseas or even "imported" it.

I've bought stuff from abroad on Ebay, but won't sell anything abroad as I don't feel confident handling the postages. Knowing my luck something would go wrong and I'd end up out of pocket. Either that or there would be a dispute and I'd have to find a translator.

Was bad enough when I was buying something from Germany a few years back and not knowing any German tried using an online translator to ask a question about postage. The seller replied that my message made no sense at all!

I sold a motorcycle engine and despite me stating the delivery cost of GBP 30 was for UK mainland only and to ask for a rate if abroad the last minute winner from Italy left me negative feedback when I told him it would cost 75 to send Rome.

Saying that there are some real idiots in this country who don't read the description properly and will ask a question even though it is stated.

Some guy in Ireland bought one of my items, paid instantly through PayPal, including for the UK postage I'd quoted.
When I said it would cost more to ship to Ireland, he basically said I was trying to rip him off and he'd report me to eBay for having excessive postal charges, said he bought lots of things from UK sellers and had never been charged any extra for postage.

Much as I love my many American friends it does seem characteristic, even among smart people, to forget that other places exist outside of the USA. ;)

My brother was selling some flight instruction manuals on e-bay and purposefully said no overseas bids as shipping will probably be more than the final bid value. A bloke from India won the bidding war (£250 approx.) and my brother explained that the Fedex cost for these would be enormous. Guy said it wouldn't be a problem. So he got a humungous quote for insured shipping from Fedex and the guy paid up.

He only wanted the take off and fly instruction manual though. Not the landing one.

Strange.
