When I read articles or watch Youtube about cleaning the chain, they all say to run it backward when lubricating it. Why? Does it really make a difference if you run it forward?

It makes a HUGE difference...

... if the back wheel is on the ground! :okay:

I'd always assumed it was about not turning the wheel* in a finger-or-rag-trapping manner...

*Editor's note - this CCer has not ridden, does not and will never ride fixed. Because, like clipless anywhere other than the stoker seat, first there would be pain and next there would be death.

Actually, I have run the chain forwards with the bike on a stand and trapped my finger between chain and chainring so that's a good point!

Because otherwise if we all did it it could upset the delicate balance of the Coriolis Effect, and the Earth would spin wildly off its axis and plunge into the distant Universe and oblivion.

Don’t you just hate it when that happens !

Spilt me tea last time. Most inconvenient. Took Will Smith and his mates* a couple of hours or so to get it back on its correct axis, so all's well that ends well.

*Who I believe were on their way to answer Accy's 101 call, so don't tell him they diverted please.

I always lube the chain on my bikes when they are on a stand and turning it forward. Never had any problems. First I clean the chain then use a marker pen on a link and oil each one until it has gone round then wipe the top of the chain.

I've trapped my finger twice, both times whilst working on my fixed, not nice, makes an orrible mess and hurts.

Ouch! At least with a conventional bike the momentum of the rear wheel isn't driving the chain forwards.

See - I told you!

I accept that others may be less catastrophically poorly co-ordinated and avoid all this, but for me, I'm not taking the risk
