For information I can easily burn 900-1100 calories per mile on my road bike and keep my heartrate at 85-90% of HRmax, I know this is not burning fat as I am well into my anaerobic threshold but it seems to be my most efficient zone. I appreciate everyone is different and YMMV.

Really?

How are you calculating the calories burnt? If you say its from your HRM then all bets are off.

And yeah, I'd test properly for your maximum heart rate because riding at 85-90% HRmax should only be sustainable for an hour or so.

NB: 1100 kCal/hour --> power output of >305W --> you must be seriously FAST (like 20mph plus on very hilly rides for example)

It takes the same amount of energy to move two given bikes over a given distance; the distance achieved will vary according to wind resistance, weight, rolling resistance and of course the efficiency, with which the rider delivers that energy to the drive train.

The same calories will be burned, the end result will differ.

If you fix any of those variables (e.g. limit both to exactly one hour) the other variables will change accordingly.

If you were able to fix all variables (i.e. identical bikes, weather, rider fitness, route) then both riders would expend the same energy to move the same distance.

I didn't even notice that. I misread it as 900-1100 per hour - which is frankly still on the high side for most people
