crumbs... I gave my set of Covenant to Andy Gates. I couldn't bear to read them again, they were so bad.

That would be unusual. My wife is allergic ( or so she says) to any jewellery made with metals other than high grade silver and gold (including white gold). She comes up in a rash. But white gold she is fine with. I'd say it was uncommon and more likely to happen with something of a low gold mix or plate. Or something being described as gold that isn't.

my girlfriend is allergic to cheap silver and similar metals, i believe it to be the nickel in the metal that she's allergic to.

gold is a rich yellow colour, silver is white and copper is reddish.
9ct Gold is only 37% gold and the rest usually copper and silver, mixed at a rate to give a reasonalble colour.
White 9ct gold is again 37% gold with the rest mostly being silver. Some cheap stuff will however put in other white metals to keep the cost down by a few pence. so buy quality stuff.
You can get white gold 18ct gold but it is not very white as it 75% gold and 25% silver.
All the above will look a bit yellowish when put next to silver in the shop.

BUT shops (and buyers) do like their white gold extra shiney and bright white so it is often plated with another metal (Rhodium) This will wear off in time if it is on a ring but problaly last better on other stuff.

Platinum in naturally a bit grey in colour and can also be plated with Rhodium.

Platinum is only sold in a very pure state - 95% pure which you cannot do with gold as it is too soft on its own.

I'm allergic to gold. I have tried to wear it on a few occasions and the result is a rather unsightly rash. I tried 18 carat gold and had quite an extreme skin reaction. My mother's wedding ring was platinum so I wonder if she had the same problem. I'm fine with silver though. My skin is quite meditteranean in tone and I think gold looks cheap and tacky on me anyway, so it's silver or platinum for me.

Thank goodness that my wife doesn't suffer any of this, she can tolerate any old bit of tin plated crap!
