Might be worth repacking the bearings with grease rather then just adjusting the cone and locking nut..
"Polished races" tells me you have traditional cup & cone bearings. Buy a set of cone spanners and sit down with a cup of tea and the wheel on your lap and get adjusting. It's a simple but sometimes frustrating job because the bearings will often go out of adjustment as you tighten the locknut.

Thanks for the advice, I found cone spanners but there are varying sizes, trying to figure out what size mine is now.

I will try that, think I need to look up and find where the bearings ARE first and how to get them out

If it helps Maz put some pictures of his bearing races on the bottom of this post. There's a post explaining how to set the bearings.

That sounds like it would be handy, but the bottom of which post?

ok, Im an idiot, I found the problem, the spoke reflector was loose and the vibrating was the noise

Bought some of those my sons bike, was a few left over so he said I should put them on mine..... Rode my bike on several occasions with no problems, then went out with some friends hitting speeds in excess of 25mph... Kept hearing whooshing sounds & had a few wobbles looking down to check i'd not got a flat - took a while to twig it was the damn spokies!!
