Cheers again

With the best will in the world, I am not going to commute in really bad weather - if it's ok in the morning, the roads are dry and no ice or storms are forecast, then possiblt...but I expect the car will be exploited in January and February

I can't see myself wanting to upgrade the Whyte, it's a £1k bike. Now if I could find as light, with discs and 105 for £750 then fab, the Marin Mill Valley ticks the boxes but still £900 (but 20lbs)

I don't see averages in the 16s as I am pitifully slow on hills!

Vickster I have a Cycles UK voucher if you need it, let me know

PS the Marin is sweet!

I've got the Giant CRS 1 (which I think preceded the Escape range) in large (I am 6' tall) and also the Giant Rapid 2 also in large- both bought from Cyclesurgery. Have been pleased with them and managed to get a decent price match deal on both.

How heavy are they? I am rather spoiled by my carbon roadbike on this score !

they'll be in the 24lb plus range and I'd also be a bit cautious about published weights, they are often without pedals and using a small frame size. If you do get a 20lb bike then adding pedals, mudguards and a rack would take that up to about 23-24lbs, or more, straight away.

I think the lighter weights tend to follow the price a bit, so a flat bar road/hybrid that it sub 22lbs will tend to be nearer the £1k mark. At least Halfords are everywhere so you can always pop in and have a heft/try of one of the Boardmans and also get an idea of the fit and geometry to compare to others.

I bought the CRS Alliance online, prior year model, for about £300 less than the £950 list price and the offers on 2011 bikes are out and about now.
