I had a pair of Shimano MW80 boots, but they split where the neoprene joined the velcro around the ankle, I'd only worn them twice. I took them back got a refund and bought a pair of Northwave Celsius GTX which have been fine.

Leather & dubbin waterproofing rather than goretex, toasty warm. I use the wrists off a pair of marigold gloves to seal the top, & the only time I got wet feet last winter the water was just short of knee deep.

I've got some BG Defrosters.

While they are splash proof/water resistant they are not a warm winter boot despite the marketing blurb. OK for mild/wet weather, not for low temps though.

i have a pair of Shimano MW02 SPD Winter Boot for 3 or 4 years (can't remember) still nothing wrong with them, they work as shimano says. BUT last year my feet were freezing during the extreme cold, but only where the cleat is. granted we did have have record low temperatures. the other winters they were fine. they keep the water out, IF, you have over trousers, if not then in extreme rain they fill up. you still have warm but wet feet.

edit: i never clean them and use them on/off road in terrible conditions.

Sidi Diablo, I bought mine 3 weeks ago but I haven't worn them yet. Quality is good though

at present i would just use over shoes, but if it gets cold like last year i may need to buy another pair.

Does anyone know of any winter shoes that take SPD-SL?

shimano do road versions RW02 i think, not sure if there would be an RW80 or not

The RW02 takes spd-sl though.

I think this is the same for all 'wet weather' boots - you can either have warmth or waterproofness. I have the Shimano boots (but will be trying again this Autumn to acquire some BG ones to replace them) as it's mainly mild and wet here in winter.
But when I go out on cold dry days, I have electronic foot warmers that I use in a pair of normal shoes with windstopper covers over the top. In general, I find the shoe+Windstopper covers better for cold weather as your feet can breathe (read 'sweat'). Previously I had a pair of Sidi fur-lined winter boots - a lovely idea but once the insides got damp with sweat, you quickly lost all the heat and they wern't waterproof enough for Cumbrian rain ;)

I don't think anything is waterproof enough for Cumbrian rain !!

Try the endura road overshoes, they can be had for about £18 and they seem to be pretty good. I bought a pair a couple of weeks ago in preparation for the nasty weather but haven't had to use them yet! :-)

Or take the advice from the IceBiking website

Alternative Solution:

Believe it or not in some cases less is more.

There are a number of cyclists, not always in the coldest of climates, but plenty chilly never the less, that swear by SPD Sandals, either from Shimano, or from Lake.

What's this, you say, are they Daft? Not at all.

Sandals adopt quickly to the addition of another layer of socks, Gore-Tex Oversocks, or neoprene booties. When out in the cold wet, you won't have wet shoes, as no water accumulates, it all runs off.

Further, you may not need to change upon arrival at your destination. All you do is strip off a layer of socks (or two), cinch up the straps, and you can wear them around the office or the house.

Cyclists in rainy Cold-Wet climates like Seattle swear by them.

Let them get wet just get some waterproof socks and you'll have nice warm dry feet, even though I don't rate Sealskinz products (some leak) their socks seem very good.

I've had a pair of Shimano MW02 boots for a couple of years and they've been brilliant. With some merino socks inside them, my feet have stayed dry and very warm, even in cold weather. The ankles bits where the neoprene cuffs are get a bit damp when it rains, but they do at least stay warm while damp.
