Lighter = faster = more fun. That's pretty much the only equation that comes into it.

Well then norman lamont, etc ....No offence like, but tha'ts the way you're coming across!

Bonj, I wasn't going to respond any more to this thread but here goes ...

First of all, I don't know why you mentioned your intended use for the wheels if the only thing that mattered was the weight.

Just get a pair of scales out and make your selection that way.

I put my oar in as I thought that something else would be more suited for your intended use, but I realised many posts ago that this view was unwelcome and I wishI hadn't bothered. I am sure you will get great enjoyment from whatever you buy.

As far as the Norman Lamont stuff goes, when people say 'no offence' it is often because they have just been deliberately offensive but are too much of a shithouse to admit it.

LOL, wow I've missed out on some fun by the looks of it ;)

Bonj, great choice in wheels, I know once you have ridden the first mile that you will be smiling and thinking about getting some more.

Chris, nice to see that you finally backed down and accepted that we are not all as plain and dull as you, thinking about the pennies rather than the fun factor, I guess you are right to save your pennies so you have something to put in the pocket of the coffin as I'm sure you want to take some with you, though I truly hope that doesn't come for many many years. Oh and no worries I won't say no offence as when I say something if it hurts you well tough luck as you probably deserved a smack down for being you

Shooter, gonna shut up, cause you're making me want these wheels even more, and I cannae afford them.;);)

Chris, I totally see where you are coming from (I think Bonj and Shooter might be being a bit harsh and overly personal). Personally I think you're right, I wouldn't spend £440 on wheels for commuting purposes only, but then I'm lucky enough to own 3 or 4 bikes and can pick and choose between them depending on the conditions/use. However, if I had only one bike that doubled as a commuting and recreation machine I wouldn't mind spending that kind of money if I was going to get the use out of them. No point in restricting yourself if you can afford it, it's only money after all.

I also don't think light rim weight always means weak or thin breaking surfaces. Those Dura Ace wheels use pretty high tech materials and clever butting techniques to get the weight down and it's not necessarily through taking off some of the breaking surface.

I agree about the low spoke count/going out of true thing though. I had a rear wheel break one of it's 20 spokes and it was a long walk home, but really, how often does that happen. I've had 4 spokes break in 20+ years of regular cycling and I'm a fat ba**ard. Sometimes that long walk home is worth a year or two of that 'this is f***ing brilliant' feeling.
