I have always used mtb shoes with cheap road spd pedal on my Caad4 Cannondale R1000 road bike:

Even with one broken adjuster, they were fine for solo rides.

But, for the past 2 weeks have been on training rides (50-70 miles with the triathlon group from our running club. Great fun riding in a bunch - and gets competitive!!!

So, I think it is time to invest in some "proper" roadie pedals and shoes.

Budget is £50-60, and for this I have found the Ultegra 6620 (310g) or the Keo sprint (260g).

Any other recommendations?

What about spd-sl versus keo? One site I read did mention that the keo was "high" above the axle compared to other pedal types.

Thanks,

For me, pedals are very much like saddles - what suits one doesn't suit another.

Are you going to be entering Tri's? If so, I'd look for a Tri specific shoe that fastens with one large velcro strap to aid faster transitions. Also, look for a shoe with a very stiff sole, is lightweight, has mesh uppers and also vented soles.

Leave them attached to your pedals then mount it, after exiting the transition area, pedalling with your feet on top of your shoes until you've got time/room to slip your feet into them. This takes skill, so make sure you practice before your first race or you'll be weaving all over the road.

Apologies if you already know this.

Seek advice from the other Triathletes at your club RE: pedals/shoes they use and maybe have a go on their bike. You'd probably have to wear their shoes though depending on what cleats you've got in relation to their pedals.

Personally, I use the old Ultegra SPD's. Small, lightweight & comfortable. They don't make them anymore though.
