Incidentally, I read this on crazyguyona bike earlier from the intrepid Erin

this one

It was a coincidence we met Toby and Danielle today, since they'd been traveling with their Ortliebs for eight months and reported that only one of their eight panniers was still waterproof - all the others had acquired enough holes and cracks that their stuff tended to get wet in the rain if they didn't take adequate precautions with plastic bags

There's also a pic of a broken fixing but they have been travelling some time.

Erin's done a great review of both her and Sam's panniers. The Ortliebs have definitely suffered and look like they'd had more breakages since.

Interesting reviews. She wouldn't use the Ortliebs again but it's questionable whether any others would have stood up to their tour!

I love this quote about Erin's panniers!!

The hook that suffered the brunt of the water buffalo attack.

Her Lone Peak ones seem to have done. You're right, they've had a thorough testing! They've been across some pretty rough terrain over long periods and have stood up to it. I don't think you can buy them over here though.

Ah, but I did actually, but the link was in German and the pictures looked pretty much the same as ortliebs but with a pocket at the front so I confess I didn't delve any further.

I see what you mean about the closing of the rollers though, I am thinking I'd have been better suited to the sport packers. Hey ho, I've spent my money now so I shall make do. I'm sure once I get used to them they'l lbe fine!

Yeah, it is strange that the link is in German, Vaude being German.

Seriously, I went onto their site for you and got the english version of the page up and copied the address, but for some reason when you post their links they revert to German. Even the Vaude English link I have saved into my favourites has reverted to Sax-Coburg. I have re-saved the English version several times but it keeps reverting to type. Hmmmm.

But their panniers are good.

I have Vaude Aqua rear panniers (though didn't go for the pocketed version as couldn't justify the extra £30) and agree they're better than the Orliebs, they fasten at the side, rather than over the top, which makes sense, and the rigid plastic back helps packing. I also think the locking fastening system and the carry handle is better. But, its your choice at the end of the day...

BTW I got my Vaude panniers from here

Hope this helps

Nice one OG. I'm sure you'll love yours as much as I do mine although not in a pervy way. For me the side pocket was the crucial thing I had to have and boy is it useful and waterproof. Vaude have the better means of securing the roll top on the sides rather like my Brompton touring pannier, the common sense way. And I like the fact Vaude have reflective material on the front, side and back of each bag. Ortlieb only have refective material on the side.

The hard backs really make them feel durable. I like the hooks that can be locked so you can lock the bags to the rack. They are just well thought out IMHO.

My only gripe with Vaude, there is one, is that there is NOT currently a Front Aqua Plus pannier (with side pocket). I emailed Vaude a couple of times last year and in the spring this year about producing one but they weren't paticularly interested or helpful. My last contact said they may make one for the summer but as yet nothing ........

It's worth getting some new carpet off cuts and fashioning some to fit inside the panniers to give protection to the fabric when carrying sharp pointy or heavy things. I have a 5 or 6" wide strip that protects the base and sides of each pannier and also helps keep the shape. Works for the Ortliebs as well. The carpet only cost me £2 for a huge piece. It's not a bad shade either if you like orangy beige. I use it soft side down in the pannier ie underside uppermost so don't see the colour anyway. It has a proper bonded base, quality, not felt or foam crap that would break up or wear away in no time. It's a pretty good mod I'm well chuffed with if I don't say so myself ;).
