Just out of curioisy I got the phone to track a small 4mile route this morning and the results were surprisingly accurate with the GPS about 100 yards short compared to the trip computer. I would call this insignificant and seems to suggest that they are both trustworthy as long as the trip computer is setup accuratelly.

This might seem a daft question, but does a GPS app on a mobile work when its in your pocket or bag. I have a cycle computer, but thought about replacing it with my phone but although I turned the app on, when I got home after a few miles and turned it off, it said I had travelled "No distance". Haven't bothered since, but people keep mentioning these apps so I keep thinking I might have another go.

My Garmin is consistent on my 8 mile commuting route to about 0.1 miles either way

That is probably attributable to the difference in lanes and such like

I use a cycle computer on the bike and cycle computer pro to map my rides on my phone. I would not get rid of my proper bike computer because gps is not 100% reliable, I was in derbyshire last weekend and most of the time I neither had phone signal or gps. So you are not garunteed to get true mappings of your route or true mileage.

I did a ride yesterday with my Garmin 800 on the bars and linked to the rear wheel cadence sensor, my Garmin 705 in my jersey pocket (not linked to the sensor so going only on GPS) and my Cateye Strada bike computer (sensor on the front wheel).
Results - 800 read 50.12 miles, 705 read 50.34 miles, Strada read 50.11 miles. Quite happy with that
Conclusions that can be drawn from this extensive road test...................I cycled just over 50 miles
