Hi all,

Firstly, I'm new to the forums, so hello, and I'm relatively new to cycling, but I appear to have caught the bug.

I bought a cheap steel apollo from Halfords a few months back, and quite frankly, it's rubbish. I've now learnt my lesson and I'm trying to find the ideal bike for me.

I'll mainly be riding on roads, but there will be the occasional gravel track or muddy path. I'm thinking that I'd be best suited to a road oriented hybrid. Is this correct?

I'm looking for some suggestions of good bikes for less than £500, or just some general tips on what to look out for.

Also, I'm 5" 10/11is, so what size frame would I need?

Thanks in advance

I have the 2009 version of this bike, it is an excellent commuter, great for hills (as it has a triple) and good all rounder. Hard to advise on size the best thing is to try that out in the shop and test ride with advice from the shop guys.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy.

The May edition of Cycling Active has a review of cross bikes for about £500 or less - haven't got the website to hand but well worth buying a copy. The only magazine I buy fairly regularly (don't work for them!). Enjoy your cycling.

Thanks for that, I'll keep it in mind when I pop down the LBS.

Welcome!

I had a Specialized Sirrus and wouldn't hesitate to buy another. As for sizing, you really need to try it, but I am 5'9 and a bit and I was between medium and large size, opting for the large. And very comfortable it was too.

Thanks guys.

Looks like specialized are getting good reviews, so I'll probably be going for one of them.

The Fuji Absolute 3.0 was the winner. £449 on the Evans Website.
