Which helmet - retro/skater style?

In the days before mushroomy polystyrene vented and finned type helmets I vaguely remember seeing a few riders wearing what looked like a bunch of bananas on their heads but which where clearly some sort of semi-rigid leather skull-cap thing.

Now...this is my kind of retro! I wonder if anyone still makes 'em?...or did I dream the whole thing??

I have one that looks similar to this: http://www.prymegear.com/helmets/halfshell/v2 in black. I find it hot, especially in summer. I am still looking for the right roadie helmet, but haven't found one yet.

I was in London recently and noticed a lot of cyclists wearing helmets like that. The only local cyclists I've seen wearing them are BMX'ers. I figured it was just a fashion thing? Or are there advantages over 'normal' helmets - like this?:

Well I am thinking of a snow helmet that has as many vents as the ‘biking’ versions the same companies make but these have the ear warmer bits, so in effect they are the same helmet plus some like the Giro Surface S have a bit of kit inside that allows you to plug in earphones, so they are great for cold-weather riding.

Thanks for all the tips. I haven’t made a decision yet but the helmet definitely has to have a lid/peak on it, I think the bowl ones would look a bit ‘special’ on a road bike. I am looking at POC helmets, TSG Trophy, Pro-Tec Scandal BOA, Giro Surface S, K2 and also Sweet (the Sweets are pretty expensive though). I am pretty much decided, I am torn between the Giro Surface S and the Pro-Tec Scandal BOA

Once I make a decision I will let you know and post a pic or 2.

Ordered this one. I wouldnt normally go for white but I was thinking of being visible to cars, plus it still looks cool. I live in a village and street lighting around that area is pretty non-existent.
