Hi all,
so after a nearly being hit by the same idiot driver twice in 5 minutes yesterday:
first when he swerved around me in primary approaching a junction he must have been close to 50mph in a 30 and only just missed the island with traffic lights on it, he then carried on up a hill overtaking people in dense traffic, and when I'd almost caught up with him cycling along a bus lane he decided sitting in traffic wasn't good enough for him and cut into the bus lane almost squishing me,

I have decided to join the helmet cam brigade

There are similar threads out there, but I especially wanted advice on budget cameras. Are there any that are worth it, or is it just a false economy and I should splash out on a contour or go pro? I also wanted advice on where to mount it as I have read it is important to have your handlebars in shot so that police etc. can get a better idea of distances. Thanks in advance.

You can get mounts from the manufacturers most of the time but there is a company called RAM camera mounts (Gaz uses them I believe) that lets you mount them anywhere.

I'm going to get a Contour ROAM - 140 quid, full 1080p HD and fully waterproof down to 3 feet. Bargain.

The £10 chinesey ones seem terrible, bought one just for fun and it stopped working after 2-3 rides, the battery wire came off the board - resoldered it and it broke somewhere else and gave up. I dont want to spend much but id like it to last a little while at least.

Ive been looking again recently, thinking about one of the Muvi cams, it looks like they might just about fit in a helmet vent which would be ideal. Im not so interested in filming poor driving as I am just filming random places i find and silly things that happen. For example a pigeon taking off nearly flew into my face when I was travelling at ~35mph

This made me cry. Instructions are pants, battery life is pants. build is pants, sound is pants...... oh it's cheap.

How good is the muvi (atom) wa thinking of getting one of them?

If you ignore the software that comes with the cam, it's great. To get vids off the cam just plug into your pc and take them from there.
I have noticed that if you record in a quiet room there is a lot of background noise, but if you are outside the sound is perfect.
Good build, highly dropable (which is good in my case) tiny in the hand which leaves enough space for winegums.
I can either plug into my pc to charge or use my phone or garmin charger. Lot's of bits and bobs that i will never use are inside the box as well.

Handy tip. Use a SD card that are a class 6 or above (i use class 10) this enables the cam to write faster and better to the disk. Anything below that gives poor image quality.
Vid shows what's in the box. Amazon had the cheapest price when i ordered mine.

My first cam was an ATC2K. Got it from Ebay for about £70. Back then (1 year) though there wasnt much choice price wise. Contours and GoPro's were very expensive. Unfortunately after trying to clean the inside of the protective lense, I broke the actual lense connection to the motherboard whilst trying to put it back in the outer case. Also the plastic base plate broke so I had to use selotape to secure it.
Fortunately, recently I came across a Contour HD on here for £100. I have never looked back since. Video quality is high (although Youtube ruins it), it is easy to use, it is fairly heavy but you get used to that.

I have even been told by a police officer upon reviewing the footage, that it was even better than having a witness as it shows what I am looking at.

EDIT: I am now looking for a reasonably cheap rear facing camera as so it will probably be around the same price range as you. I am not going to go for the MUVI's as they have a habit of breaking, and I am currently looking at the dogcams. I will give you a list in a min of the ones which I am currently looking at.

Doh, i liked the look of them. Doesnt look like you can fit them in a helmet vent and still operate them though anyway  Id prefer it to look subtle than riding round looking like the droid
