All the more reason to have a dedicated GPS cycling computer.
I agree - I use a Garmin 800! I'd rather have the phone fully charged for emergencies.

My s3 would disagree about battery usage. It's fine. Uses no more than normal day to day use.

on my galaxy s2, i can get 3-4 hours continual use before the battery becomes an issue.
I have also a 10,000mah battery pack, which is about the same size of the phone. so when plugged into this I estimate that i would get around 15-20 hours, but i have not used it till it ran out (yet)

Have to be honest I was going to buy a cycling GPS unit, but I've got an Iphone & I have Endomondo for my running, so i just use the cycling tracker on that. Endomondo is free to use, you can keep track on your history etc... very good website, in my humble opinion no need for a cycling GPS unit.

Benefit of the s3, not sure of the s2 is I can also remove the back and change batteries if so required.

Two 3800mah would far outlast any GPS device and a phone put together.

The only thing I see missing, which I don't need at the moment, is cadence. But even then, I can use an otg cable and ant+ USB to connect to the s3.

Gotto love android.

s2 has a removable battery as well, but I find an external battery pack more convenient. If you get the zephyr bluetooth heart rate monitor , you can also get cadence

How does the BT HR monitor get cadence?

Strava doesn't support cadence at the moment, so not too worried.

I just try to ride and enjoy ;)

How does the BT HR monitor get cadence?

A good question.

I know my heart races sometimes when descending on fixed but I didn't think there was an algorithm for it! ;)

I was lucky enough to drop on a Garmin 800 with full UK OS 1:50,000 mapping for just over £200 early last year. It adds to the pleasure of the ride for me and I consider it an excellent buy.
