Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and about to return to cycling after a long absence.

I used to be pretty clued up about bikes ten years ago, but I'm not so confident now so I thought I'd seek some advice from you guys...

I'm on the verge of buying myself a new Hybrid bike for a five mile commute to my new job. I've a budget of £250 and whilst poking around in my local bike shop my eyes alighted on a pair of Dawes hybrids, both priced at £239.99

One is a Dawes Mojave and the other a Dawes Discovery 201.

The Mojave has mudguards and a rack as standard (both of which I would have to buy for the 201), the 201 seems to be better specified.

Now, Dawes is a brand that I have owned in the past and trust so these are both attractive sets of wheels to my mind - the question is which one is the best bet, or is there something else I should look out for in my price bracket?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome.

I'm not an expert on Dawes bikes, but from a quick look at their website I would go for the Majave as the rack and mudguards will probably save you £40-£45.

However you might want to look at some other makes before buying. Dawes used to build all their bikes in the UK, but now import everything from the Far East so are little different from any other bike manufacturers who do similar hybrids. For example Edinburgh Cycles sell several different hybrids within your price range.

Rather than "poke around" your LBS I would suggest you go in and have a proper chat with them about what you need - tell them your intended use for the bike and budget see what they recommend. Also try out any bike first before purchasing to make sure it fits correctly and is comfortable for you - don't just go on looks.

If your local shop isn't helpful try another independent bike shop.
