I am deciding between buying this:
http://g-whizzcycles.co.uk/?product=trek-740#prettyPhoto/0/

And one like this though not this exact one:
https://www.gumtree.com/p/bicycles/ladies-ridgeback-motion.-hybrid-bike.-size-medium/1195164660

The Trek only has 6 gears whereas the Ridgeback has 21, which I am told will help me going uphills as I live in a very hilly city, but I don't know how true this is. The Ridgeback is from a trustworthy non-profit community bike shop and is much newer and has lots of new parts, but the shop of the Trek I am told is also good and am told that generally Trek bikes are better even if this one is older?

Trek also comes with stand, dynamo lights, mudguards and the back bit for panniers, the Ridgeback I have seen is £110 and comes with mudguards but none of the other extras.

Any advice or thoughts much appreciated!!

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
My university has those Ridgeback's as their student hire bikes - very reliable and easily maintained. They're seen all around Leeds, which has it's own hills.

I've a Ridgeback Platinum audax bike and that's been fine for 6000 miles, including my 765 mile Paris-Brest-Paris in 68 hours last year.

That's my view :okay:

The Trek is a cruiser while the Ridgeback is more sporty and may be rather lighter. I'm assuming you're a lady. The extra gears may indeed be useful if you are using it in a hilly location. You could fit a rack and mudguards to the Ridgeback, obviously at extra cost.

We're all different but if it were me I'd go for the Ridgeback. £100 is a good price so I shouldn't hang around. Just noticed you say it's similar, not that exact one.

That's great thank you both!! Will go for the Ridgeback then I think which I was leaning towards anyway as the community project was very friendly and helpful and said I can go back whenever for help with maintenance etc. too which will probably make a lot of difference going into the future. The one in the shop is £110 not £100 - it looks pretty identical to the gumtree ad so same model just not that exact bike. Thanks so much both for your help

Go for the one from the biking community place - way more reliable than gumtree - and it's a decent more modern bike too

Maybe, but it will be heavier and without the range of gears the OP wanted.

I perhaps should have mentioned that buying a used bike at this price point can be a bit fraught as it obviously won't be in as new condition. If she has ready bought it I'd advise taking it to a good bike shop and have it checked over if only from the safety aspect.
