I know ... how long is a piece of string ....................

However I was considering getting a second hand Dawes Galaxy for a ride I am doing in September, but looking on ebay I haven't seen anything that I am comfortable with so far, and time is getting tight. I considered buying new, but of course they are £1100+, and I'm not sure if I can justify that.

Being a bit of a novice on types of road bikes, can you please suggest what similar bike would be suitable for the job? Its around 1000 or so miles over a two week period, and I really don't know what to look at as an alternative.

I'd be happy to spend around £700

Ribble Cycles and Edinburgh bike co-op do some budget tourers if you want to buy new.

Otherwise you could look for used examples of the following:

Claud Butler Dalesman

Raleigh Randonneur

Ridgeback Voyage

Mercian also appear in the 2nd hand listings too.

<<<< that's me riding one !

Not so keen on the new ones (although I've never ridden one).

I'm not sure if its in your budget but I was impressed with the look of a Kona Sutra a friend bought last year for a long ride.
