I do think there is a lot of navel gazing done on the subject of bike chain lubrication. It's a lousy piece of design. It sits in prime location to pick up all the road crud off the front wheel and we sit here and debate which lube, how often, which side of the rollers to lubricate (I kid you not) and the thing gets plastered in either dust or muddy water first time out. It then sweeps all this crud around the whole system and if you are lucky most of the crud gets swept off the chain and into non moving contact bits like jockey wheels etc. Just oil the thing, regularly, keep it clean(ish) and wipe off any excess oil with a tissue. The ride it. It will wear out, when it does you canreplace it. It doesn't have to be any more complex than that.
