Hi, I just bought a fairly big heavy lock, for insurance purposes, and I'm wondering how you carry yours along with you? Do you attach it too the frame?
My big 10lb chain stays on the stand at work. My heavy Krypto Mini forgetitpunk goes in rucksack with an Abus Bordo (additional protection when not at work) and a coil lock (for securing saddle and carbon seat post....)
On my commuter the Lock is attached to the frame I mount it on the seat tube but reversed like this so it doesn't interfere with a water bottle. I find it doesn't rattle there and if it did i'd rather it rattled there, than inside a bag eventually wearing a hole.
Edit: and like other people I leave the heavier lock (New york+Kyrpto flex Cable) at work.
Odd-job bike - d lock on the frame - doesn't rattle on account of clever mounting bracket design.
Roadie - have one of those retracting steel cable ski-locks in the seat pack for cafe stops etc. Not secure as such, but good enough for going up to the counter to order/sitting by the window.
When I didn't work at home - big lock left at each end.
Other occasions - lump it in the ruck-sack or bungee on the rack if I have one.
When I commuted I carried a light 30 second stop lock and left a seriously heavy motorcycle lock on the stand at work, where there was 24/7 security. Not sure how sensible this would be if there was only part time security but it worked for me.
I leave my D-lock chained to the stand at work, however, just in case someone decides to superglue it or tamper with it in any way, I have a second D-lock in the cupboard at work, so there is always a replacement. For short stops I use a cable lock which is attached to the bike.
Anyone seen the UGH brackets by ABUS? a secure way of locking pretty much anything lock related to a rack... 20quid is a bit much, but I reckon that'll solve my weighty rucksack problem.
D lock and long cable lock stay in the shed and I keep a fairly weedy cable lock at work- mainly to deter colleagues from hiding my bike (the site is pretty secure). If I needed a really heavy lock at work I'd leave it there.
Only problem with this system is it makes it difficult to stop and buy milk on the way home. What I need around here is a ride-in market.
Used to carry my old, cheapo cable lock in my rucksack; now I have a bike with a rack, so I put on some panniers and my new D lock goes in there. I have this thingy to mount it on my bike, just haven't had the time to do that yet.
