Thanks for all the helpful advice; I will be trying some club runs over the rest of the summer and, hopefully, into the winter too.

NO, no, no!

"15 miles of great cycling, and the whole way full of walkers, boaters, fishermen and bike riders. It really felt good to be alive. Ended up with a slightly sore b*m and blisters on the heels of both hands"

That is cycling for you! Do NOT go on. Next time it will be raining, wind will be against you all day -even if you ride a circular loop.
Go to the pub, play chess with a friend next to the fire place.

Or come down to Kent with me on 4.9. to do the 12 h time trial.

I stopped a couple of guys some years ago -they wore really silly, old fashioned jerseys, looked woolly to me- on their ride. Thornton Road Cyclist they were. Been riding with them on and off for about 4 years now. There is a fast ride, a "nice" ride and a social ride, very VERY slow including at least one pub stopon the road.

You could do the same, as soon as you see a rider, talk to him and ask about the rides.

And remeber:blush: warned you!
