I had considered that.. but the makers have anticipated such and I find all manner of sizes have changed since the days of plentiful steel MTBs - oversized this and that, new wheel sizes etc. Maybe I should look into it more critically!

OK so it looks like there are a couple of makers still out there, though it's a shame there seems to be a premium for steel when I'd have thought it should cost less. I guess economies of scale.
Aluminium frames are a lot cheaper to build once you've set up a robot welder to do em whereas steel frames need to be brazed/welded together by a skilled craftsman so cost a lot more.

Steel has also, much to some people's surprise, become fashionable again - see my comment above about steel singlespeeds.

In a few years, after it's been semi forgotten a bit, no doubt the "industry" will be trying to big up aluminium again, as a newly discovered wonder material that is so "this year".

I picked up an old 90s Tange frame the other week for £30 - it seems sound.

And worth bearing in mind that some of those steel 1 inch threaded headsets fitted in some of those old frames are pretty bomb proof.

Ohh I remember the original D.O.G.S bits frames....
