where can i buy my first cross bike?

i am a mountainbiker mostly but want a cross bike so that i train (get some road miles in) and commute to and from work using bridleways and other off road sections

i don't want to spend alot (£400 - £450 ish) so maybe second hand is the way to go? or are there any decent new in this price range?

anyone recommend where to look

Fair few about. edinburgh bike company sell the cheapest new one.
after that its the usual suspects.
