As I was out for a ride today I passed numerous people (most were going the other way lol) on bikes. I found myself automatically categorizing them as cyclist and person on a bike (POAB). What in your opinion defines a cyclist as opposed to a POAB?

They're one and the same.

When you're on a bike you're a cyclist, when you're not you ain't.

For me, its when you take pride in doing it right, and maybe trying to improve some aspect of it. Its kind of hard to describe.

A POAB is easy to decribe (in my opinion), its someone that thinks that being on a bike is like walking, but you can roll downhill.

I'm with Smokin' Joe on this.
Some cyclists are cycle enthusiasts, that's the only difference I see.
Got it in one.

I had to laugh at an old colleague who started cycling to work every day and in all weathers but insisted that they weren't a cyclist. Surely anybody who pedals a bike is a cyclist; it just a matter of being a occaisional/leisure/commuting/ touring etc. cyclist.

Every day I go to the shop and buy the Guardian. I might miss the odd day through the week, but never Friday, I like the Film & Music section too much. So every day I'm buying the Guardian, but I refuse to refer to myself as a Guardian Reader.

Semantics, always trying to keep me down.

If you spend £220 on these, you are a cyclist obviously haven't heard of Aldi and Lidl.

Otherwise, you are a POB and a total loser.
