I don't think there is a time scale.
I'm still a beginner and will be for a while yet I would assume.

What makes someone a true cyclist that's the question.

The first step to not being a beginner is to never admit to being a beginner. I mean did you learn to swim in the paddling pool? No.
Paddling about in the paddling pool with Speedo's and flippers will establish your reputation as a beginner (or a retard) as will cycling long distances on a sit up and beg with basket (especially if you lift both legs when you go through puddles). So the first step is to look the part but make sure you stay in the cycling equivalent of the deep end until you feel confident or cease to look like an Easter egg.
Disclaimer: I accept no responsibility for anyone who dives in the deep end before they know how to swim or if they are riding a bicycle.

You stop being a beginner when you join a club and start to do there sunday club runs !

Back in the day.
I got chatting with a guy from the Pontefract club on Fiday, and he was telling me loads of stuff about riders in the 50's and 60's and bikes and design, he still rides and he is in his late 70's thats a cyclist.
I am a very solitaire creature, unless it has to do with naturism and nature, (don't confuse naturism with nudist) I am very concerened with nature and the environment.
