..definitely inside the outer ring-road, anyway.

Coming from the Wolds it's when I pass Stockton on Forest, say Deans (Stockton on Forest has apalling road surfaces).

Coming from the North York Moors it's Strensall although I'm not keen on the bit between Strensall and the ring road.

When I am on tour it's the last day. I never like the last day.

When I see the top of the spire of the church in my town...

It's not a God thing, it's just a real-world map pin.

Bizarrely, I always tell myself how many big climbs I have to go - and I always add one to the total....

Then, after the last one I can tell myself the truth and the relief is enormous...

... because until then I was expecting one more climb.

How does that still work after years of self-deception and knowing all my routes like the back of my own hand?

There's one road patch with a crooked shape about half a mile from home on the inward journey. When I hit that - job done!

For me, It is when I am either at Potters Bar to the North, Enfield to the East, Highgate to the South or Stanmore/Harrow to the West. It means I am only 4/5 miles from home.

My usual route is pretty much split 50/50 uphill/down hill. When I reach the halfway point in miles (its about 75% in terms of ride time) and reach the brow of that big hill I consider myself to be on the final straight home

When cycling all the way home: Once I have passed Sainsburys in Hampton, and tackled the horrid roundabout just after it that lies just under the A316 (which is an elevated section and might as well be a motorway already, it turns into the M3 2 junctions down).

When doing the Brompton bike-train commute from Central London: with headphones on so as to block out the 'the next station is ......' announcement, when I see Twickenham rugby stadium as that means 1 or 2 stops to go, depending on the train.

As an almost solely commuter rider, it's the same place every day on the 11 mile return journey. After emerging from Doncasters pedestrianised zone, and hitting the empty bus lane, it's the start of my 2 mile 'sprint' finish, where I put the most effort in to give myself a proper work out and get super sweaty!

Reaching the outskirts of the estate I live in. It also means if the fairy visits I would probably consider pushing my bike home instead of trying to mend it at the side of the road.
