When are you 'nearly home'?

A comment I made on another thread made me think - when out for a ride, when do you consider yourself nearly home? Is it a matter of miles? Time? Familiar territory?

For me, it's a combination of mileage and familiar territory, or maybe time... dunno really. If I know the roads, I can be as much as 40km away and still think 'nearly there'! Other times, it seems to be if I'm within an hour of home.

...or yet maybe, it depends on how far your ride is/was because, by my above definitions, I can be nearly home before I've even left! Which, I suppose, is geographically accurate

From the main road, it's when I go past the village. From the back lanes to the north, it's when I hit the long hill down into the village and from the south, it's when I either come round the corner and pass the house with towers or, from a slightly different direction, hit an even longer (down)hill that requires no pedalling for over a mile

It depends on the distance ofthe ride, but generally it's when I've got over the hill-that's-not-really-a-big-hill-but-knackers-your-legs a mile from home

On longer rides it's the feeling of knowing I'm going to get home without keeling over, rather than it being a distance thing.

Top of the hill into Stirchley. Then it's downhill all the way. Any hill between you and home, and you're not "nearly there" yet.

When I'm inside city boundaries. Which is a bit daft really, since if I go north that's about half a kilometre, south or east it's more like 10

If it's a long distance cycle it could be anywhere, within 100 miles on a long trip is nearly home to me. That is what i felt after doing 1100 miles, that the final 100 miles was nearly home.

On the other hand travelling on a ferry from France, it would be when i see the Isle of wight, then i'm nearly home.

My real home is Scotland, but i've obviously grown to like Gosport and Hampshire.
