Wheel

After months of entirely silent running am getting a mild chinkling, jankling noise from front wheel, like a slightly erratic clicking of pawls in a freewheel..
Seems to be coming from the rim rather than elegant large flange old hub which, while not buttery smooth, has no play in it. Wheel spins for all eternity when spun off the ground, so no hub binding.
Wheel true and round.
Noise present both under load and with the wheel off the ground.
Is this a symptom of uneven spoke tension? Can I remedy this without truing stand and without pringling my wheel?
Something else?

Unless the spokes are really loose it won't be them.

Sounds like a) something inside the rim or b) the top of a nipple has broken off and is sliding up and down a spoke.
