I don't disagree if he's buying them for the looks as the LBS owner said he does a great trade in deep rimmed carbon wheels as they look amazing on a bike. Part of cycling for some people is having a great looking bike and if that's what makes you happy when doing group rides and sportives then buy the coolest looking wheels you can afford. For pure performance for your money the LBS owner said you need to be spending at least £500 on a set of wheels for marginal increase in speed which is only noticeable once you start going 22-23mph. Great for racing but not much use on social rides.

Hi , I just generally ride with friends , average ride 40 -50 miles , and the occasional sportive , so a few hllis as well as flat

In which case, the honest answer is to get any wheels you like the look of, depending on your budget.

That's what I meant in the previous post, buy them if you want cool looking deep section rims but don't expect to feel any real benefit unless you start getting up to higher speeds which are not usually maintained for long on social rides. My opinion is that if it's for a performance upgrade then you need to spend big bucks and there's no real reason for this on social rides unless you want to beat your mates to an imaginary finish line.
