the Spokey spoke key gets good reviews, seems better thought of than the Park tools one.

That's the one to get. Normally the red one but check the size of your nipples.
I would also take the tyres off the rims when you do it (bike upside down).

I considered whether that surpassed the @ fnaar threshold but decided it didn't.

A pair of forks will suffice for a truing stand. If you feel 'handy' it's possible to make one out of wood or some steel scraps and a few nuts & bolts. All it has to do is hold it in place and be reasonably rigid. If the bearings are good (smooth with no play) there is very little resistance when the wheel is rotated, so it shouldn't cause the truing stand to wobble at all.

Buy a stand. Next thing you know you'll be building your own wheels. It's fun (almost).

Built a few now. Latest set very recently. Surprisingly quick as well.
