morning

the rear wheel is from an old mtb i bought second hand from "evil bay" and on closer inspection the rear wheel as play on the axle and the cassette.

the cassette as been removed (screw on type) and the axle stripped down. Its only a cheap wheel so would probably cheaper to buy a complete wheel but

i like to try and fix things so if i buy a new cassette this will fix the first problem but which part wears out first on the wheel axle.

A the axle. B the hub. C the bearings. D all 4.

just want to repair as cheap as possible

thanks

There's a good guide on what to do here;

http://steveukmtb.wordpress.com/shimano-hub-overhaul-cup-and-cone/

(Assuming you have a Shimano Hub).

If you must repair it then

1. Check the bearing races in the hub - if there is any pitting then dump the wheel.

2. Then check the cones - if there is any pitting then they will need replacing.

3. Check the cassette for play - if there is an undue amount then I'd get a new one.

4. Change the hub bearings anyway - they are only a couple of quid from your LBS.

If everything is ok then re-grease in a dust-free environment with clean grease. You will need some cone spanners.
