Andrew, how do people get messages? ...do you have to be connected to Twitter all the time, and how do you cope with and filter the 000s of messages people must be constantly posting?

On my phone I have set the notifications to tell me when someone has mentioned me in a tweet (retweeted or replied to me) or if I get a DM (direct message).

I've just written this blog post for you - Why you need to create Twitter lists...

You only see messages from the people you choose to follow (plus a few 'spam' ones from organisations who presumably pay to advertise, but there aren't too many).

When you log on, the tweets since you last looked are there in your timeline - I usually scroll down until I find the last one I remember reading and then work back up through them. Any tweets that come in while you're logged on, you get a notification at the top of the list. It would be better if it could be like the forum, and you could go to 'last unread'. Or maybe you can and I don't know how!

I follow a few friends, my work, Stephen Fry, and a couple of green/recycling blog/sites. Often they post links to websites etc. I've found a couple of useful craft ideas that way, and found out about stuff I might not have done otherwise.

I think the thing is not to get sucked into the 'must have more followers' thing, like friends on Facebook. Only follow people you're interested in, and don't be afraid to unfollow them if you find they tweet too much, or stuff you don't like.

Some people tweet little and often, some clearly sit down once a week and share every interesting link they've come across since last time in the space of 10 minutes!

...and from my understanding of Andrew's blog; if you're in a list you're not following the individual members of the list and you won't get notifications for the members' tweets. You can, however, see all of the members' tweets but you must proactively go looking for them by clicking on the list.

Yes, that's my understanding of his blog too. I guess it's like the difference between viewing the forum by clicking 'New Posts' where you get all new stuff listed, and viewing it a forum at a time and going into the threads you're interested in.

That's correct, all tweets are public unless you protect your account.

One of the 'fun' things I like about Twitter is searching the hash tags during something like Strictly Come Dancing; they can be brilliant!
