When government put money into public transport is a subsidy and seen as bad and every government set's about cutting it. When public money is used for road building it's an investment and every government fall's over themselves to be seen as the one who can spend the most.
Until the penny drop's that good public service cost's and on the whole the pubic need to pay for it it can't stay as it is.
Agreed. Also until the penny drops that local bus and rail services mean that local people are employed, and therefore spend money in the area. We have several towns near here that own their own railway, and invest heavily because that means money flows back into the towns via staff wages.
As a passenger, the bus service in London is excellent, and the drivers are nearly always considerate to cyclists. It's the coaches from out of town that scare me when I'm on the bike.

We have a few small rural railway lines that have reopened as community cooperatives and like you say benefit all round. Sadly the debate here is private , private/public sort of fudge or at worse a return to the good old day's of state owned BR. The idea that a community can own and run a service is lost on most of our over lords.
