My musical taste is very broad, and I do quite like some classical music. It's just that I can never remember who wrote what or what any piece is called. I wouldn't dare go to a concert of any one composer's work as I really wouldn't know whether I was going to love or hate it, and I'd feel out of place.
For anyone who feels the same, I can thoroughly recommend those Raymond Gubbay "Classical Spectaculars" that take place at Birmingham Symphony Hall every December. Classical pieces presented in a hit-after-hit format as if presented by Ronco or KTel (for oldies who remember them) or (a more recent analogy) as "Now that's what I call classical music". No dress code, so anything goes, from jeans to dinner jackets. Just a steady stream of familiar pieces that you recognise from adverts and TV shows, all accompanied by a constant laser show and a fantastic finale of the 1812 Overture .... accompanied by indoor fireworks and the guns and cannons of the Moscow Militia. Throw in a bit of Last Night of the Proms too, and it never fails to impress.
