Good to see you gaining some pleasure from the products of religion -
history is full of artists pandering to patrons with the power/infuence/money/jobs/fame/sex
just take a look at the modern masters of capitalism/drugs/finance - not a lot changes.
Bodies with cash/power seek to gloss themselves through patronage.
I'd take another look at some of those madonnas if I were you.
And madonna blue.

Regarding brutalist churches I don't know if the
Catholic cathedral in Liverpool counts. "Paddy's wigwam" for some, meant affectionally or otherwise. It's not bad from the outside but inside is stunning from the light coming in from the stained glass lantern; a magnificent building

Just read the wiki article. Hadn't realised they'd originally envisaged something akin to the nearby Anglican one. The various problems aren't too surprising - I remember when I visited it was a bit shabby up close (outside) wi to crumbling mosaics etc, but still stunning inside

I went to school here:

And then I did my MEng degree here (Brunel University, Uxbridge campus):

Ya beat me to it @Reynard! Up thread I mentioned RAF West Drayton, but the associated married quarters were at RAF Uxbridge, only a cast concrete’s block throw from Brunel. I went to Bishopshalt school, just on the edge of the campus so remember it quite well. Used in the filming of A Clockwork Orange I believe.

I did many a bus journey between Uxbridge station and campus, which took me past RAF Uxbridge - and its spitfire-on-a-plinth.

An episode of The Avengers was also shot on campus.

I was at Brunel from 1993 - 1998, and have some really good memories of my time there.

I was long gone by then - I think my dad was posted out around 1983. I did have a ringside seat for the 1981 bombing though. My mum thought the bang was me and my dad messing about.

Here‘s one that is arguably modernist but is still pretty brutal - Winchester Combined Court. I walk past this daily on my way to work. It’s physically attached to the 13th century Great Hall, which makes for a contrast.

Makes me wonder what kind of messing around you used to do... Sounds like potential fun, if you ask me...

I've walked past there of a time or two when I've travelled to Alresford via Winchester rather than via Alton. It's hard to forget what is a very distinctive building...

Wow, that reminds me of some of the German defences on Jersey.

OT, but if you want to mix up your next ride to Alresford I have a cunning plan that involves …….. the Basingstoke Alps!!!! PM me if you’re interested.

Maybe that's were the architect got his idea from, it's very similar, isn't it? Although the location is much nicer than plonked right next to a six-lane urban highway...

Re the OT... You forget I live in the fens! You'd have to answer to a pair of hungry and cranky cats if I don't make it back...

the bits in the middle of each "unit" at the top seem to have no windows. What's there? Or is there a window on the opposite side of the building at those points?

this place is also interesting.
Cortoghiana
just south of Carbonia (new name of course - some tinkered with memorials)

When I was last there the church in the centre of the terrace was disused/closed.
But Mussolini had a somewhat interesting relationship with the Italian church of course.

not sure if this is another fascist church? Can't remember where i took the piccy though, somewhere near Olbia? I didn't notice a huge amount though but stayed up in the north.
